Ulrich Hobelmann remarks that in my article Public Goods Fallacies (and hence the essay Government is the Rule of Black Magic from which it is excerpted), I had misattributed to Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary the following quip: Majority, n.: That quality that distinguishes a crime from a law. Well, I had wrongly jumped to conclusion from the proximity and similarity of the quote to other funny definitions by Bierce, and I hadn't deigned to double check the link I had provided myself. The quip is no quote from there, and Google doesn't obviously find any attribution to what I found in the Linux fortune(6) files. Mea Magna Culpa. Making wild generalizations is a good thing; it is the very process of imagination by which any science progresses; but the necessary counterpart of an idea generator, as good as it may be (and good yields are still infinitesimal), is a sturdy crap detector. (OK, Google finds only my blog for this formula, that I derived from Vernor Vinge's A deepness in the sky, and who knows where is the origin of this traditional AI model.) And the bullshit filter part of my mind seems to be lacking, at times. From now on, I will try to systematically devise tests for the conjectures I make, before I may jump to conclusion. Any of these tags make things much shorter and much more readable than they were in XML. However, SEX, like XML, has this advantage over MEX and RPN that it works well even in absence of a grammar definition (DTD, etc.): you can exchange SEX services with foreigners or be an intermediate in their SEX transactions without having to learn any of their foreign languages; SEX is a universal means of communication!

Nos zamis-les-bêtes, quand ils voient un problème, en appellent à une action commune coordonnée (par eux si possible) pour le résoudre. Ils mettent les malheurs du monde sur le dos du patronat, de la CIA, et autres organisations occultes. À l'opposé, ils rient quand nous parlons d'ordre spontané et d'émergence de phénomènes non coordonnés. Et bien sûr, quand on accuse l'Establishment socialiste, ils prétendent que nous donnons dans la théorie du complot, cependant qu'ils savent évidemment qu'un complot socialiste n'existe d'autant moins que l'Establishment est selon eux dominé par les forces démoniaques ultra-libérales.

Le mot qui me revient alors est animisme. Les gens qui voient de l'intention et de la concertation partout, ce sont des animistes. Comme quoi, certains ont toujours deux mille ans de retard... le problème étant bien sûr qu'ils veulent y entraîner les autres avec eux. Rétrogressistes extrêmes.

Juste parce que j'affirme que Chirac est mieux que Le Pen (ou que Le Pen est moins mauvais que Chirac) ne fait pas de moi un chiraquien (ou un lepéniste). D'ailleurs, je n'ai voté ni l'un ni l'autre. Une préférence, affirmation descriptive, n'est donc pas une action, pas un engagement de ressource. Je n'ai "soutenu" ou "défendu" ni Chirac ni Le Pen. Face à l'alternative proposée, je ne réponds ni oui, ni non, mais Mu. C'est-à-dire que je rejette l'alternative et je refuse de cautionner l'un ou l'autre, comme je suis (heureusement) encore libre de le faire. En fait, je ne cautionne même pas l'élection: je boycotte les urnes par principe.

Et pour rendre la chose plus claire encore: entre Hitler et Staline, si on me forçait à choisir, je choisirais bien l'un des deux. Cela ne fait de moi ni un hitlérien ni un stalinien. Et d'ailleurs, ma préférence marginale pour l'un n'empêche pas que je n'ai rien fait pour soutenir l'un ou l'autre. Mu. Bien au contraire, j'engage ma part de ressources dans la recherche thérapeutique contre le national- et l'international- socialisme. (Si ce cas-là vous paraît trop difficile à trancher, remplacez l'un des deux par un méchant "évidemment" moindre mais toujours néanmoins monstrueux à vos yeux, que ce soit Mussolini, Roosevelt, Napoléon, Barbe Bleue, etc.)

Ceux qui forcent d'autres à choisir sont des criminels. Ceux qui interprètent une préférence comme un engagement sont des imbéciles.

The Naoshima contemporary art museum epitomizes this saying by Tom Stoppard:

Skill without imagination is craftsmanship. Imagination without skill is contemporary art.

My! Even my uncle Quoc does better art than this! These pieces are to art as schoolboy jokes are to literature. They may be funny if that's your kind of humor and you've never heard them before, but to present that for art is an insult to intelligence. If it's art you're interested in, don't bother with the exhibits, the only valuable work of art here is the building by Tadao Ando. Now, if you happen to be there already, pay a visit to the annex, open between 12:00 and 13:30; otherwise, you may skip Naoshima altogether, your time will be better spent in some other place. On the other hand, if you're an aesthetic relativist, do go there and relish at the heights of creativity presented there: this way, you'll help keep better places clean from your stench.

As usual, lots of nice people there, sadly mobilized to catter for this joke of an art. I made an encounter with a promising potential, but in which I had a block; I didn't know/want to take the consequence of this block and either unblock or disengage soon enough, but I tried to get the most out of it, and that together with the works of mostly mindless art found there inspired this haiku:

Humor and ridicule are the only proper answer to such stupidity. Well, they are also the appropriate answer to the fear-mongering statists who demand that the world should be subject to their schemes least a great catastrophe will happen.

With Dubya promising to spend zillions of dollars to send a few privileged civil servants to Mars, I am irresistibly reminded of this quote from one of my favorite books, Teaching as a Subversive Activity, by Neil Postman (RIP) and Charles Weingartner:

How do we know whether this is one of man's noblest achievements or if it is a game being played by a small group of lunatics for their own amusement -- at our expense?

Postman hits the nerve, he knows what questions to ask, what assumptions to question. But being a depraved leftist, he can provide no justifiable criterion to answer. Ayn Rand does, in her essay Collectivized Ethics, as included in her essay collection The Virtue of Selfishness. Too bad it's not on the web yet, but here's a purchase well worth it: concise, compelling, to the point. And no, I prefer not to retranslate to English the relevant excerpt back from the French translation on my laps.

Dans une discussion, d'aucuns tenteront de discréditer leurs accusateurs en disant que ceux-ci lancent des attaques ad hominem. Voilà bien un anti-concept de plus, un raisonnement à l'envers, dont des terroristes intellectuels se servent pour empêcher quiconque d'arriver à la seule conclusion rationnelle les concernant, à savoir leur culpabilité, telle qu'étayée par moult arguments valables. C'est une interdiction de penser, une interdiction de juger à leur encontre, eux ne s'empêchant pas, et par leur affirmation même, de dire du mal d'autrui.

Drieu Godefridi, fondateur de l'Institut Hayek Institute, est un garçon que j'aime et que j'admire. Nous avons beaucoup en commun, et je suis fier d'avoir marché à ses côtés à Bruxelles dernièrement; sur le plan humain, j'aurais beaucoup à apprendre de lui, de même que de la plupart des libéraux que je connais. Cela n'empêche pas qu'il y a des divergences intellectuelles entre nous: il s'est notamment fendu en son temps d'une Critique de l'Utopie libertarienne (il veut dire par là de l'anarcho-capitalisme), qui par delà les choix contestable des correspondances mots-définitions, repose à mon sens sur une erreur d'attitude. Pour moi, Drieu est une victime profondément atteinte du Ghost Not phenomenon: trompé par les mots parce que voulant être trompé par les mots.
