So I told this liberal colleague about my speaking at a Libertarian conference in Europe. They must be loaded was his immediate reaction. How much cognitive dissonance must it take to establish who's promoting the Synopsis, and who are the dissenters speaking truth to power?

Two radically opposed comic books: on the one hand, "City of Glass" (1994) by Paul Auster, masterfully adapted into a graphical novel by Paul Karasik and David Mazzucchelli. On the other hand, "Siberia" (2006), by Nikolai Maslov, an amateur artist (originally published in French in 2004 as "Une Jeunesse Soviétique"). The first author is a renowned new-yorker, born in ease, made rich by success, a goodthinking member of the intellectual establishment. In a flippant book that means to be the ultimate stylistic exploration of confusion between levels of discourse, he wanders without goal and all the technical virtuosity of this grandiloquent quest for meaning finally leads but to crass nihilism. The other author is an unknown Russian draftsman, born in poverty in Siberia, a mere pawn processed by the soviet soul-crushing machine, a dissident by heart without being an intellectual, who has been denied any access to culture. In a graphical autobiography, he tells the story of a simple man who aspires to escape the material, intellectual and moral misery imposed by communism; in the end of a chaotic journey under the claws of the regime, he finds meaning to live in personal accomplishment through thick and thin, with humility. The first one has everything yet his abject depravity leads him in a huge waste to reduce this everything down to nothing. The other one has nothing yet by his moral strength manages to overcome not only the worst of oppressions but also and most importantly his own mistakes. "City of Glass": 0. "Siberia": 10.

L'un est auteur chic niouyorquais, né dans l'aisance, enrichi par le succès, bienpensant membre de l'establishment intellectuel. Dans un livre fantaisiste qui se veut un exercice de style ultime dans le genre de la confusion entre niveaux de discours, il erre sans but et tout la virtuosité technique de cette grandiloquente quête de sens n'accouche finalement que d'un nihilisme crasse. L'autre est un russe inconnu, né dans le dénuement en Sibérie, simple pion pris dans la machine soviétique à broyer les âmes, dissident de coeur sans être un intellectuel, s'étant vu refuser tout accès à la culture. Dans une autobiographie graphique, il raconte l'histoire d'un homme simple aspirant à sortir de la misère matérielle, intellectuelle et morale imposée par le communisme; à l'issue d'un parcours chaotique à travers les griffes du régime, il trouve sens à la vie dans une réalisation de soi contre vents et marées, en toute humilité. L'un a tout mais son abjecte dépravation le conduit en un immense gâchis à réduire ce tout à rien. L'autre n'a rien, mais par sa force morale, arrive à surpasser non seulement la pire des oppressions mais aussi et surtout ses propres erreurs. "City of Glass": 0. "Une Jeunesse Soviétique": 10.

When Patri mentionned the idea of religions and cults being memetic parasites, and the following discussion bore on the difference (if any) between religions and cults, and how a same religion could sometimes have both normal and fanatical followers, my answer (in the comments) was that often the same parasite could express itself in many different ways, depending on the hygiene of the victims.

I cited the example of tape worms, that cause a rather benign intestinal infection in people having decent hygiene standards, in a way that isn't contagious to other such people, but can cause brain damage and even death amongst people with low hygiene standards, in a way that is highly contagious to other such people and contagious to to cleaner people as well. The hygiene standards discussed here consist in systematically washing your hands after any risk of contamination, segregating your food from your feces, avoiding meat of dubious quality, properly cooking meat that isn't known to meet high standards of quality, avoiding contact with people with poor hygiene and cleansing thoroughly after such contact.

And I further argued that the very same applies in the case of those memetic parasites that religions are. I said that providing our children with proper standards of hygiene, mental as well as physical, was the most important part of parental education. It is of utmost importance that children be taught such mental hygiene rules as cleansing their minds after they've been potentially subjected to propaganda, segregating what they believe about reality from what they (and other people) fantasize, rejecting beliefs of dubious origin, thoroughly criticizing all beliefs but those that were grown using the highest standards of quality, being especially wary of people around you with low standards of hygiene.

I concluded: And be sure to teach that hygiene to your kids, early on. You can't change the rest of society, but if you can change the people who count most around you. And once enough people adopt good hygiene, and the people with bad hygiene are weeded out by their behavior (rather than being protected or subsidized by the state), the community's standards of hygiene will get higher and the parasite will disappear, except for small ostracized fringe communities.

Now, I like to say that I don't count the word god as sacred, so I don't think religions that use it are worse than religions that don't. People who believe that the word god is special will be relaxing their mental hygiene against religions that respectively do or don't use that word, depending on these people themselves respectively believing in god or not -- this is the reason why all religions, whether theistic, atheistic or neutral on this topic, tend to collaborate in spreading this superstition. This meta-superstition was interestingly discussed by Mencius Moldbug (MM) on his blog devoted to debunking this memetic parasite that is the (now) atheistic religion of progressives (and their conservative hysteresical followers) who view the State as the embodiment of societal progress.

Interestingly, applying evolutionary thinking to the study of religion doesn't stop to talking about it in terms of memes. Religions evolve. They compete with each other. And where there isn't an official monopolistic religion or ideology protected by the State, religions have to compete in a ruthless struggle over believers. This yields religions that strip themselves from useless or obvious superstitions, and focus on the essential vectors of infection and payback. While there is room for plenty of variants to accommodate plenty of niches, these religions loosely converge on what MM calls the Synopsis, a lean and mean kernel of beliefs that will justify State plunder in favor of those people and institutions who will further spread same beliefs in the State.

In one of my comments to that article (you may search for Faré), I note that the very nature of the Synopsis is that it conflates the true and the false [and as another commenter further quoted from Rand, Governmental encouragement does not order men to believe that the false is true, it merely makes them indifferent to the issue of truth or falsehood.], and tries to minimize the false needed (which both makes it more fragile and makes its slaves less productive) while maximizing the return on investment of the false.

And indeed it is in freer western societies that the worst strains of statist thinking evolve into existence, out-competing other strains in their struggle for power. From there, these strains spread to less free countries, where the most efficient memes from western ideologies have massively deadly consequences on weaker populations unable to resist. Guns, germs and steel -- and ideologies. In the third world, political devices are largely imported, just like all other technological devices. That's why MM is on the spot when he claims that communist regimes as well as third world dictatorships are emanations of western progressive ideological activity.

Happily, rational criticism, this natural defense against lies and bullshit, as promoted by infection-resistant or cured individuals is not wholly absent from the relatively free environment where these strains evolve, and this helps limit the morbidity of these pathogens, at least in western societies. But rational criticism has a cost that not everyone can afford, and the pathogens have evolved in a way that even people above average in intelligence and education can completely fail to see the edges where the web of lies falls apart. And so it's mainly the competition for more productive slaves that keeps in check the destructive effects of the Statist memes. However, this competition happens mainly between different countries rather than inside any given country, and so the political oligopoly of our world works toward increasing the level of political parasitism.

In conclusion, the biggest and most dangerous religion is Statism. It has benign and malignant modes of transmission. The best thing you can do to limit its bad effects upon you is to cultivate good mental hygiene for yourself and those you love. To avoid social disruption by epidemics of a severe form of mental infection, you may seek to spread hygiene in the society around you; failing that, your only recourse is to migrate to a society with better general standards of hygiene.

Notons aussi les soucis environnementaux à deux vitesses de nos amis national socialistes. L'environnement, ça veut parfois dire sauver nos amis les bêtes des balles des méchants chasseurs. Mais une fois les bébêtes nationalisées, ça veut dire des gentils chasseurs en uniforme gouvernemental qui abattent les nuisibles bestioles maintenant déclarées trop nombreuses. Ah le prestige de l'uniforme! L'environnement ça veut surtout dire un bon prétexte pour justifier tout et n'importe quoi pourvu que ce soit le gouvernement qui le fasse, et qu'il nous balance le mot environnement dans ses explications. L'environnement c'est le nouveau refuge des totalitaires de tout poil. Mot-clef suscitant une réaction émotionelle pavlovienne d'approbation sans critique chez les citoyens préprogrammés.

Mon paternel réagissait il y a quelques temps à mon commentaire sur l'académie. Tonner contre - mais en faire partie si l'on peut, me rappelait-il -- définition que Flaubert donne de l'Académie Française dans son Dictionnaire des idées reçues. Si on m'offrait un poste dans cette académie, refuserais-je? Sans doute pas. Cautionné-je pour autant l'existence de cette institution? Certes pas. Et vu que je consacrerai plus d'énergie à dénigrer cette institution qu'à briguer mon accession à icelle, j'imagine assez mal qu'on m'y invite.

Laurent Lafforgue, réputé l'un des plus brillants esprits de France, avait été invité à joindre le dénommé Haut Conseil de l'Education pour donner la caution de sa médaille Fields à cette machine à parlotes comme les politiques en créent si souvent pour payer leurs copains à faire semblant de résoudre les problèmes des français avec des millions soutirés de force au contribuable. Pas de chance pour ces escrocs, Laurent est aussi quelqu'un d'une grande probité intellectuelle, et qui s'est donc atteler à étudier le sujet en question. Sa première intervention a donc déplue aux mandarins de l'Establishment, qui ont immédiatement exigé et obtenu sa démission. À lire.

Chapeau bas donc à Laurent, qui démontre contre vents et marées qu'il existe encore de grands esprits intègres en France -- même s'il ne s'agit que d'une minorité, et seulement dans ces sciences dures où il est impossible de tricher.

The worst enemies of nature are the so-called ecologists, who ask for ever more government intervention and totalitarian control to impose their superstitious lunacies. Not only do their pseudo-scientific rants not rest on anything but irrational lies repeated over by a corrupt establishment; their evil ways, when backed by government violence, end up destroying horribly the nature they claim to protect. These people don't know the meaning of a rational argument, and are not willing to do simple arithmetics. Be sure that they will blame civilization and liberty for the result of their policies of de-civilization and oppression, and end up intensifying these policies in a vicious spiral of Evil. No, these destructions are not some perverse effects of the policies they back -- the perverts are these ignorant twits who refuse to acknowledge the previsibly baleful consequences of yielding to their emotional excretions. PS: as I've remarked previously, biofuel would probably be much cheaper if the EU didn't massively subsidize the overproduction of useless food (that ends up being stockpiled and ultimately destroyed). Instead, EU not only subsidizes the waste of Europe's agricultural resources, it also subsidizes the destruction of Asian forest, and the annihilation of African agriculture. If destroying nature were a crime, EUrocrats should be right next after the ecologists against the wall.

Alice et Free semblent échapper au massacre. Pas étonnant que la France soit alignée avec les dictatures pour demander le contrôle de l'Internet par l'ONU...

Il enseigne les maths à l'université. Elle enseigne les lettres au collège. Ils sont passés directement de la case embrigadement à la case propagande, sans arrêt à la case réalité. Ils sont tous deux socialistes. Très socialistes. Et privilégiés. Très privilégiés. Fonctionnaires: emploi à vie, salaire augmenté à l'ancienneté, retraite confortable assurée. Enseignants: temps de travail réduit, travail sans surveillance directe. Responsabilité réduite: suivre les programmes et ne pas faire de vague, peu importe le résultat désastreux. Grand pouvoir social: ils peuvent influencer de nombreux jeunes français.

In a bus to NYC early in January 2005, I met this gorgeous girl who was reading a course in Economics. The textbook was open on a praise of the Fed and its role in regulating the National Economy, with an opposing page in a special color denoting higher science, that justified this role based on one macroeconomic equation by Keynes. It was too tempting, so I started a conversation.

I greatly enjoyed driving on highway 101 between San Francisco and Mountain View. Part from the reason was the nice rental car. I liked its automatic gear box a lot, though I couldn't manage to use it till I had some passerby explain to me that the brake pedal also served as the clutch. All the americans I met were so very nice, except for a civil servant from MBTA (who was notably lacking niceness though without being rude). Reminds me of Japan -- however, though the japanese might have seemed even nicer, I couldn't understand what they were saying, whereas I can speak english and enjoy american niceness.

En France, la propagande gauchiste est systématique, du berceau au cercueil, à l'école, dans les mass-media; même la pseudo droite a embrassé les idéaux de la gauche. Face au lavage de cerveau permanent, les français se sont adaptés: ils ont appris à ne plus croire en rien. À répéter ce qu'on leur dit de répéter, quoiqu'on leur dise de répéter, mais sans y croire vraiment; comme ils l'ont fait pendant des siècles sous le joug catholique. Face à la gangrène intellectuelle, les français se sont amputé l'intellect. Ensuite, il ne faut pas s'étonner qu'ils vivent en handicapés...

De toute façon pour croire à des idées plutôt que d'autres, il faudrait que les mots aient un sens, et pour cela, il faudrait qu'il y ait discussion rationnelle. En l'absence de discussion rationnelle, il ne reste à communiquer que des alliances et oppositions affectives. Les français ne croient pas, ils s'allient, ils communient.

La religion, qu'elle soit chrétienne ou socialiste, ne consiste pas en un système de pensée, mais un système de non-pensée. Toutes les ratiocinations théologiques, sociologiques, philosophiques, etc., des universités aux soldes du pouvoir sont des divertissements, des diversions pour occuper en âneries inoffensives le trop plein de penser des hommes (qui décidément ne peuvent pas s'empêcher de penser), autant que des outils d'accoutumance à l'obéissance et au remplacement de la pensée rationnelle et l'initiative individuelle par des slogans canalisés et des réflèxes d'obéissance.

Et bien sûr, ce que ces amputés volontaires ont en horreur, ce ne sont pas d'autres amputés affiliés à un autre culte, qu'ils peuvent se permettre de mépriser de façon paternaliste, -- ce sont les hommes libres qui refusent de s'automutiler, et qui continuent de penser par eux-mêmes, ces reproches vivants, qui rappellent en permanence leur abjection aux superstitieux.

Quand les mots perdent leur sens, les hommes perdent leur liberté -- Confucius traduit par Hayek.

Dans notre Espace de Francitude Génial (EFG), tout le monde apprend à l'école et dans les médias à haïr le libéralisme, cette bête immonde qui dévore nos vies, dixit la religion officielle. Cependant, les idées libérales sont systématiquement censurées, et le peu qui échappe à la censure est systématiquement déformé. Aussi, chacun apprend à mettre sous l'étiquette libéral tout ce qu'il déteste, avec pour seule contrainte de ne jamais s'en prendre directement aux valeurs officielles de la religion officielle, le socialisme. Mais comme tout ce que connaît l'Homo Collectivus Gallus (HCG) est socialisme, ce qu'il déteste se trouve n'être que sous-produit de ce socialisme! Ainsi, l'image du libéral honni est en fait la projection des névroses du socialiste. C'est pourquoi les omniprésentes vociférations de haine à l'encontre du libéralisme, dont le principe rappelle les deux minutes de la haine quotidiennes de 1984, ont pour résultat assez cocasse de révéler les démons qui hantent des esprits corrompus par le socialisme.

La monarchie, l'aristocratie, la démocratie, la ploutocratie, la gérontocratie, Bettino Cracci, etc., sont des leurres. Par définition même du Pouvoir, il n'y a qu'une seule forme de pouvoir: la cleptocratie. In a private email, my friend gustavolacerda, tells me that he begins to realize how people see Government as a magic provider of goods for free, that turns whims into reality simply by pronouncing sacred words. (They dub such pronouncements enacting laws -- but, as Frederick Mann remarks, that is but an instance of the Ghost Not phenomenon.) He asks me if that was what I was trying to tell in my essay Government is the Rule of Black Magic. It looks like he's beginning to see the fnord!

Y a-t-il trahison des clercs, comme le dénonçait déjà en son temps Julien Benda?

Pour affirmer cela, il faut souscrire à la superstition officielle selon laquelle le rôle des clercs ait jamais été autre que de participer de l'oppression en répandant l'abrutissement. Bref, ne pas avoir compris la structure de classe de la société.

When faced with the rise of Gubernator, many statist minds (including the totality of the french mass media) disparage the phenomenon as a corruption of the democratic process. According to them, such candicacy makes a mere show, of what ought to be the business of professional politicians, experienced people with life-long dedication to public welfare, and so on. They see Arnold's success as a bad joke, as a vulgar populist mistake (they are in practice quite elitist despite their official egalitarianism), as heresy and treachery using republican institutions against their own purpose (which purposes the statist intellectuals think they are the ones to define and to guard). This is exactly what happened during the Middle Ages, when the priests tried to monopolize art with their sacred art, and disparaged the popular profane arts, seeking to prohibit them or otherwise hamper their popularity whenever they could. Actually, the statist intellectuals are but the clerics of the modern official religion of totalitarian statism: paid directly or indirectly with tax money to justify and extend indefinitely taxation and established privileges in the minds of the public, systematically removing resources from anyone who could question them and seek to abolish them.

Confrontés à l'ascension du Gubernator, de nombreux esprits étatistes (y compris la totalité des mass media français) présentent le phénomène avec le plus grand mépris, comme une corruption du processus démocratique. Selon eux, une telle candidature transformerait en un spectacle de bas étage, ce qui devrait être l'affaire de politiciens professionnels, personnes expérimentées qui ont dédié leur vie entière au bien public, etc. Ils voient dans le succès d'Arnold une mauvaise blague, une erreur populiste vulgaire (ils sont en pratique très élitistes malgré leur égalitarisme officiel), ils y voient hérésie et trahison des institutions républicaines retournées contre leur propre objet (lequel objet les intellectuels étatistes se réservent le droit de définir et le devoir de garder). C'est exactement ce qui se passait au Moyen-âge, quand les prêtres tentaient de monopoliser l'art avec leur art sacré, et dénigraient les populaires arts profanes, cherchant à les faire interdire ou autrement à limiter leur popularité dès qu'ils le pouvaient. En fait, les intellectuels étatistes ne sont que les clercs de cette religion officielle moderne qu'est l'étatisme totalitaire: payés directement ou indirectement avec l'argent des impôts, pour justifier et étendre indéfiniment l'impôt et les privilèges établis dans les esprits du public, en retirant systématiquement toutes ressources à quiconque remettrait en question ces impôts et privilèges et chercherait à les abolir.
