A critic of Moldbug's views contested that Universalism fails to actually denote anything coherent, because there is no well-defined set of beliefs that can be unequivocally associated to said Universalism. But that's missing the point.

Universalism, despite its claims to the contrary, is not a rational philosophy; it is an emotional religion. And so, its basics tenets are not concepts that can be rationally articulated; they are anchors that are emotionally expressed. Liberty, Equality, Fraternity, Democracy, Universal Rights, Peace, Love, Everyone, People, etc. -- all these are the Good Things, but not in any rational concept, always as emotional anchors, as Sacred things beyond discussion.

Take Swiss Cheese, the variety that comes with holes (technically known as eyes). There is a clear correlation between holes and cheese: the more cheese there is, the more holes there are. If you purchase twice as much cheese, you'll get a volume of holes twice as big. Since correlations are symmetrical, this also means the more holes there are, the more cheese there is. If you purchase enough cheese to double the volume of holes, then you have purchased twice as much cheese. Thus, a static mind satisfied with correlations may conclude that a good way to increase the total quantity of cheese is to increase the total volume of holes -- which may be achieved quite simply by drilling holes in the given supply of cheese. Of course, this means fails, because it changes the proportion of holes to cheese, whereas the measured correlation upon which the reasoning stands crucially depends on this proportion being a constant. Yet that's exactly how macroeconomic regulation by government works: find some existing correlation between some kind of wasteful government spending and a measure of general welfare, and then forcefully increase the spending in the hope to increase welfare...

Am I deriding all beliefs as silly? No, just like Razib, I believe. In Science. Not in fake consensus science issued by an Establishment backed with political violence. In the science that emerges out of the rationally competing views expressed on a free market.

The worst enemies of nature are the so-called ecologists, who ask for ever more government intervention and totalitarian control to impose their superstitious lunacies. Not only do their pseudo-scientific rants not rest on anything but irrational lies repeated over by a corrupt establishment; their evil ways, when backed by government violence, end up destroying horribly the nature they claim to protect. These people don't know the meaning of a rational argument, and are not willing to do simple arithmetics. Be sure that they will blame civilization and liberty for the result of their policies of de-civilization and oppression, and end up intensifying these policies in a vicious spiral of Evil. No, these destructions are not some perverse effects of the policies they back -- the perverts are these ignorant twits who refuse to acknowledge the previsibly baleful consequences of yielding to their emotional excretions. PS: as I've remarked previously, biofuel would probably be much cheaper if the EU didn't massively subsidize the overproduction of useless food (that ends up being stockpiled and ultimately destroyed). Instead, EU not only subsidizes the waste of Europe's agricultural resources, it also subsidizes the destruction of Asian forest, and the annihilation of African agriculture. If destroying nature were a crime, EUrocrats should be right next after the ecologists against the wall.

A random correspondant argues against picking the least of two evils. Quote: you don't have to align yourself toward fighting the worst evil to be morally correct. if you're fighting evil you're fine Yeah sure. So you can help the greater evil prevail and feel morally justified. And he even acquiesces to this conclusion. That's moral bankruptcy. And I'm sorry to tell that this and the rest of his discourse sounded terribly like LRC to me: the very libertarian economists who should know better are not exempt from this failing.

Morality is about making choices between available opportunities; it is the very same as the Human Action of austrian economists. Thus, there is no good but the best available choice. Comparing outcomes to a pipe dream utopia, finding none to be good, calling everything evil, and then feeling justified in doing anything whatsoever, because whatever you do, you can construe one evil that you're fighting -- that's but a rationalization for abandoning any and all sense of morality. It's a trick to evade the necessity of examining moral options actually available in the context of the real world, instead of mere general abstract approximations thereof that are wantonly oblivious of the specific constraints of reality.

I repeat, morality is about making choices and directing behaviour in a world of actual choices and real phenomena. Anything that denies the nature of morality is anti-moral. A good choice is one that leads to a better world, as compared to other available choices. A bad choice is one that leads to a worse world, as compared to other available choices. This is why morality is based on economic reasoning, and why people who deny that morality is rooted in actual choices are doing accounting fallacies.

Nos zamis-les-bêtes, quand ils voient un problème, en appellent à une action commune coordonnée (par eux si possible) pour le résoudre. Ils mettent les malheurs du monde sur le dos du patronat, de la CIA, et autres organisations occultes. Le mot qui me revient alors est animisme. Les gens qui voient de l'intention et de la concertation partout, ce sont des animistes. Comme quoi, certains ont toujours deux mille ans de retard... le problème étant bien sûr qu'ils veulent y entraîner les autres avec eux. Rétrogressistes extrêmes.

Un mot qui revient souvent en France, le choix de société. Sous-entendu, Je choisis, tu es la société. Car bien sûr le rhéteur s'empresse de donner des conseils sur ce que devrait être ce choix imposé à tous par la force -- le choix s'entend comme terrain pour nos chers êtres supérieurs, cependant que le commun des mortels n'a qu'à opiner. Un choix de société, basé sur l'intérêt général, le bien collectif, la raison d'état, l'économie nationale, j'en passe et des meilleures: voilà les mots clefs de tous les salauds assoiffés de pouvoir de la terre.

At the ITA movie night this week, we watched Mulholland Falls by Lee Tamahori (1996). A good film noir on the Evil of Power. Synopsis: little evil meets Big Evil and gets a glimpse of what Evil is. The philosophy of evil is randianly summarized thus: "The cornerstone of civilization is human sacrifice."

I wonder what is the class of statements that a movie can illustrate. Could it be possible for a movie to illustrate that "Power is not evil in itself, Power is Evil itself"? How can a movie provide for economic reasoning rather than mere accounting fallacies? (Using "Run, Lola, Run" techniques, maybe?)

Quand Raymond me demanda d'écrire pour lui, j'en fus très flatté; Et de suite s'imposa ce sujet que j'avais décortiqué: la Magie Noire, et son règne insidieux sur notre société. -- Hein???

La magie noire, c'est attendre le bonheur, le succès, la rédemption, etc., de la part d'entités supérieures. C'est croire que ces dieux apporteront ces bienfaits par miracle si les croyants s'humilient, consentent des sacrifices, soumettent les incroyants. Croire que ces êtres surnaturels ont des pouvoirs illimités et ne sont tenus par aucune loi rationnelle, mais par des désirs arbitraires. Bref, faire reposer son espoir irresponsable de jouissances sur les caprices d'intervenants extérieurs dont on revendique l'ignorance.

Or, la religion officielle de ce pays n'est-elle pas un culte de magie noire, où l'État est Dieu? Au moindre problème, il s'agit de "débloquer les crédits" -- une manne divine bloquée par des démons! À tout sujet médiatique, on crie à une "réglementation" -- le progrès s'obtenant par simple décret. Mais que Dieu-l'État ne décrète-t-il pas la semaine de 4 heures, champagne et caviar gratis, un doctorat pour chacun? Partout, l'État est vu comme un Sauveur, un Berger, un être extérieur à la société, source d'une bienveillance absente des hommes, dont l'action ne coûte rien et accomplit parfaitement son intention affichée.

Questionnez ceux que vous côtoyez sur ce qu'ils attendent de l'État. Vous verrez que la magie noire règne sur les esprits. Car ceux qui sont contrôlés ne sont pas ceux sur qui on jette des sorts, mais bien ceux qui croient en de tels sortilèges.

While in the States, I had an argument with, of all persons, a French man. He argued for relativism, that true and false do not matter, and might not exist at all, that every situation is unique, etc. Yeah sure! His example went that everytime he heard that same Opera was unique. And my reply was that everytime he'd have to listen to the noise of a jackhammer for two uninterrupted hours would be just as unique. He was an extreme example of what Ayn Rand called the anti-conceptual mentality.

Jeudi 20 janvier 2005, j'étais de par ma réputation de libertarien invité de Henri de Lesquen dans son émission Le Libre Journal des idées politiques sur Radio-Courtoisie, face à André Bonnet dans le rôle du catholique-traditionnaliste et à Henri de Lesquen lui-même (en l'absence du troisième invité initialement prévu) dans le rôle du libéral-conservateur. Henri de Lesquen avait articulé son émission en trois partie, définies par les questions suivantes: Un état laïque peut-il avoir une morale?, les droits de l'homme peuvent-ils tenir lieu de morale?, Faut-il avoir peur de l'ordre moral?. J'ai été je l'avoue très mauvais: j'ai tenté sans cesse et trop rigidement de revenir au plan que j'avais établi, au lieu de m'adapter aux interruptions et digressions de l'animateur; aussi, j'ai trouvé les bonnes répliques après l'émission plutôt que pendant, et c'est vous qui devez subir maintenant ce que je n'ai pas su dire alors.

I quite liked the initial movie Spiderman, which was a didactic story about a geek whiz kid who discovers his moral choices make a difference (and other people's too). But this sequel is more than disappointing: where the first issue was an original ode to morality, this second issue is a boring cliché that instead that promotes a form of moral lunacy, of inversion of values, of philosophical absurdity -- the seed of madness, which leads its individual or collective victims to self-destruction.
