As for an experimental test of the deception theory, I suggest a protocol whereby the second male should be alternatively visible and invisible (behind a stainless mirror), and see if his subsequent behavior (in presence of absence of the first male) is in any way modified by the difference in behavior of the first male, and if this modification is indeed to his detriment, which would establish deception. My money is on the absence of measurable deception.
